WALENTYNKI — VALENTINE'S DAY IN POLAND
Surprise! Valentine's Day was NOT traditionally celebrated in Poland. It only became popular after 1989 when Western customs flooded in after the fall of communism. Today it's huge — especially among younger Poles — with roses, chocolates, and romantic dinners everywhere.
But Poland has its OWN love traditions that are way more interesting...
CHELMNO — POLAND'S CITY OF LOVERS
The small town of Chelmno in northern Poland is officially the "Polish Capital of Valentine's Day"! Why? Because the Fara Church holds actual RELICS of Saint Valentine — a fragment of the saint's skull in a 17th-century reliquary!
Every February 14, the town hosts a massive public celebration called "Walentynki Chelminskie" with heart-shaped benches, gardens, and sculptures everywhere. Think of it as Poland's answer to Paris!
PLOT TWIST: In old Polish tradition, St. Valentine was actually the patron saint of... EPILEPSY, not love! Heart-shaped wax offerings were MEDICAL, not romantic. It took Western pop culture to transform him from a healer into a matchmaker.
NOC KUPALY — THE ORIGINAL POLISH VALENTINE'S DAY
Centuries before Valentine's Day, Slavs celebrated Kupala Night (Noc Kupaly) around the summer solstice — a 1,500+ year old pagan tradition dedicated to the god of youth and love!

WIANKI — Young women wove flower wreaths and floated them down the river. Men downstream jumped in to catch them — if a man caught YOUR wreath, you were destined for love!
